2011.04 [ORIGAMI-BOAT project] (public installation) Rotterdam, Holland

2011.03 [ORIGAMI-BOAT project] (public installation) Rotterdam, Holland
This public installation was inspired by Japanese "Shourou-Nagashi", a ceremony to commemorate and guide departed spirits back to the other world. Traditionally, the ceremony centers on lanterns constructed from paper and wooden frames floated over water. In an alternative and secular re-interpretation of this tradition, 1000 purely origami boats are to be floated with open candlelight such that they may easily interact with their surroundings in an effort to highlight and contrast their relative exposure to, and relationship with the natural world. While literally referencing Japan's Sendai earthquake and subsequent tsunami, the installation is meant to serve not only as a moment of candid observation and remembrance for the fallen victims of this disaster, but also as a broader expression of the direct emotional pain and sorrow surrounding casualties throughout the modern world. As such, this timely event is scheduled to take place April 11th 2011, exactly one month following the earthquake in Japan.
